Eric's Christmas trip from Sandy this year was to Death Valley. It was a complete surprise for us, not what either expected. We thought it would be miles and miles of desert salt flats. Instead (in addition to miles of salt flats) there was a wide variety of geological formations, the ability to go from -380 feet below sea level to 5000+ feet above the same point, and a diversity of plant life. (Not to mention one day's 65+ MPH winds at higher elevations.) A much more unique spot then we were expecting!
