On the first day, we visited Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace.
Tiananmen Square was a little busier then when Sandy had visited it in 2007 - this time it was the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and it had turned into a major holiday. There were many floats on display in the square (the flower pot below is made out of 100,000 individual flower pots!) There were also estimates that 500,000 people visited the square that day...
We then walked through the Forbidden City, followed by a formal lunch, and then on to the Summer Palace, complete with a marble boat commissioned by one of the emperors.
