We started this year's vacation with a week going down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. We did both the upper and lower parts of the run. The scale is hard to comprehend - rock bluffs stretching thousands of feet above you.
During the day, the temperature would get over 100, but the river temperature is quite cool, in the low 40s. So while you had to be careful with the heat, it wasn't too bad. For hikes up into the side canyons, you definitely tried to stay in the shade as much as possible!
In the evenings, we would camp on sand bars. A couple of the evenings, high winds picked up, and we would have to try and shield ourselves from mini-sandstorms that would come up.
At the end of the trip, we were boated back across Lake Meade, and then bused back to Las Vegas (where we had started from.) After 7 days on the river, moving a few miles an hour, and with the same group of the people for the whole trip, Saturday in Las Vegas was a bit of a culture shock!
