We traveled from Florence to Sorrento by train, and then bus. Before reaching Sorrento, we stopped at Pompeii, and toured the ruins, with Vesuvius hanging in the background.
While in Sorrento, one day we took the hydrofoil over to the island of Capri, and took a small boat tour around the island, including going into the famous "Blue Grotto". We then hiked around the island, taking in the scenery.
When it came time to leave Sorrento, we took a bus on down the coastline, passing through small towns like Positano, and eventually getting in a boat which took us into Amalfi. We walked around Amalfi, and then eventually left by bus to head towards Rome, but stopped at the palace at Caserta.
Caserta was built by an exiled nobleman to duplicate Versailles in France. Unlike Versailles, it was never sacked and burned, so much of the furnishings are still there, including the statuary that the nobleman had raided from the Pompeii ruins. For those interested, Caserta was used for filming the Naboo palace in the Star Wars movies.
