On this day, we visited Penguin Island. Elephant seals have made this home, shared with a colony of penguins.
In the early days of Antarctica exploration and exploitation, this island was used to hunt whales from land. They would be harpooned, drug up on the shore, and then rendered for their oil. Because of the climate, many of the bones are still strewn about the island.
Afterwards, we caught a break with the weather, and were able to sail into the caldera of Deception Island. It's a very narrow entrance (~500m) so one of the rare times we weren't allowed up on the bridge.
